Like A Friend (after Pulp song)
A short series of quick paintings I made during the pandemic lockdown in 2020. These plastic manga figures were in a pile under a light that gave them interesting shadows. I was thinking about the overbearing closeness that the pandemic brought to many of us and had us examining our whole lives. The song by Pulp, Like a friend, amps up those kind of regrets and makes them bitterly funny. I wanted to have the paintings be like that. They are small 9x12 mostly, and painted in one session. I used colors that reminded me of technicolor movies from the 40s, luscious and sometimes sickly at the same time.
The paintings are about female rage as much or more than they are about sex.
