The Invisible Woman
This series is about female aging, and how one gradually becomes invisible to many people. When young, we are often defined, and define ourselves by our looks. Many of us expect to be objectified, even as we complain about it.
I must admit to feeling a certain amount of anxiety at my own increasing invisibility.
The character of the Invisible Woman is an attempt to sublimate that anxiety.
She lives in a fantasy world where she goes unnoticed and is thus able to inhabit the worlds of beauty that fascinate her. She can control these worlds, making their inhabitants do her bidding.
I have liberally made use of work by various Rococo and Romantic artists. The lush, over the top nature of these paintings as well as the romantic, voluptuous mythological characters suited my idea of her fantasies.
